ACCBE FREE EVENTS/TRAININGS (Dates subject to change)

 

 A. Advocacy: Regular forums to hear updates on state and Federal Legislations from subject matter experts and advocates from the field; join ACCBE’s Advocacy Committee to shape our 2025 advocacy agenda and strategies. 


1. Advocacy and Legislative Forum:

Session 1:  January 27, 2025, 6-7:15 pm - Registration Link


Learn about proposed legislation related to literacy, juvenile court schools/camps, foster youth plus an overview of the proposed budget and legislative landscape for 2025. Also, share your input and help shape ACCBE’s legislative priorities.  Current Speakers include:

  • Lee Angela Reid- Partner, Capitol Advisors Group
  • Dr. Alison Yoshimoto-Towery -  Executive Director, UC/USC Collaborative for Neuroscience, Diversity, and Learning; California Institute for Law, Neuroscience, and Education
  • Dr. Tamara Hunter - Interim Executive Director, LA County Committee on Prevention and Promotion
  • Overview of state legislative issues for 2025 (speaker TBD)

2.  ACCBE Advocacy Committee:  Monthly starting in March 25th.  Help shape our advocacy agenda and strategies. We request participants to attend the committee regularly. For more information and to receive an invite contact: secretary@accbe.org


3. Advocacy 101 workshop (date TBD) A primer for how the legislative process works, the importance of Trustees engaging in advocacy,   how to build relationships with your legislator(s) and inform them about the role of county board members and the issues our students and families face. ACCBE will share resources and tips on how to do this.  

New and Newish County Board Members Events:  60-75 minutes online events for new board members.  

  1. Workshop 1: February 3, 2025, 5:00-6:15pm.  Registration Link. Network with other new county board members, learn about and sign up for “ACCBE Mentoring Program”; receive “Real-Time Tips for Governance Success.” 
  2. Workshop 2: Your Board’s Role As An Appellate Body (March 3, 6-7pm). Registration Link. Network with other new county board members, review the Trustee Handbook and Supt and Board Member roles, focus on “Your Boards Role as an Appellate Body”, get your “real time” questions answered and receive tips for success. 
  3. Workshop 3: (April 7, 2025 ).  Based on input from the previous sessions and attendees’ interests, this session will be fully responsive to relevant challenges, questions and topics of interest to new county board members. 
  4. Workshop 4: May 5, 2025 Based on input from the previous sessions and attendees’ interests, this workshop will be fully responsive to relevant challenges, questions and topics of interest to new county board members. 
  5. ACCBE Coaching/Mentoring Program: Sign up to be coached/mentored by a seasoned County Trustee. Your Coach/Mentor will meet with you once a month. or as requested, one on one (Virtually).  Examples of topics to be covered include: just in time advise for being prepared for your board agendas and meetings, review your board bylaws, understand your role as School board of record for court and community schools, talk thru sticky governance issues, answer questions you have about how to be an effective ambassador and advocate for the students you serve, respond to your other needs and questions.

C. Member to Member Quarterly Learning, Sharing and Networking Support: Quarterly 90 minutes Learning, Sharing and Networking meetings with other ACCBE Trustees to share successes and seek peer advice to address challenges.  Based on input, timely topics and speakers will be included in the learning portion of these meetings.  


Session 1: First Learning/Networking Session is scheduled for March 17th 6:00 - 7:00 PM via zoom.  Register Here  

Meeting includes Networking, Learning around “Reimagining CTE -Blurring the Lines Between Workforce, Education and Economic Development to Support Our Most Vulnerable Youth” plus just in time peer coaching on relevant issues to county board members.


Future Quarterly Peer Learning/Networking Sessions: June 2, Sept 1, Dec TBD


On Going Governance/Peer Led Coaching sessions for all trustees: August 4th, Oct 6th, Nov 3rd. Open sharing space for all trustees to bring up issues you face as a trustee or board and receive peer to peer coaching. Plus, a safe space to just connect with peers from around the state.   

 D. Innovations in Education Forums: These forums and learning communities will help you be an effective advocate for bold and innovative strategies that work to improve student outcomes. Potential topics: court and community schools, CTE, Literacy and others. More to Come.
